Rutherford Wine Company Finds Spirited Flavor In Bourbon Barrel Aging
January 29, 2018— Rutherford, CA— Rutherford Wine Company has announced the launch of Four Virtues Bourbon Barrel Zinfandel 2016. Packaged in a contemporary, whiskey-inspired bottle, this bold, expressive Zinfandel combines fruit from the Lodi appellation with the spirited flavor of Bourbon barrel aging for a one-of-a-kind wine. The new release has a suggested retail price of $25 (750ml).
“Experimenting with different barrel regimes often leads to great discoveries,” said Rutherford Wine Company winemaker Jay Turnipseed. “In this case, aging in Bourbon oak barrels imparted layers of caramel, vanilla and toasty oak to the wine’s naturally intense dark berry character. The result is a robust, deliciously complex and silky smooth Zinfandel that the Lodi appellation is known for.”
Bourbon barrel aging for both beers and wines has gained attention in recent years. Turnipseed now thinks he understands why. “Zinfandel, with its fruit forward nature, can really stand up to a bit of oak aging. When experimenting with different barrel types, we found our Lodi Zinfandel finished in heavily toasted barrels normally used for Bourbon aging was a perfect marriage.”
