Decanter World Wine Awards 2018 is pleased to announce Karen MacNeil as new US Regional Chair, Tony Aspler returning as Canada Regional Chair

London, England – January 19, 2018 Decanter, one of the most well respected publications in the wine world, extends a special invitation to US and Canadian wineries to enter its global wine competition. Now in its 15th edition, the Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA) is the world’s largest and most prestigious wine competition judged by top wine experts from around the world.

Decanter is pleased to announce a new Regional Chair for the USA on the judging panel, Karen MacNeil. Karen is the only American to have won most major wine awards given in the English Language. These include the James Beard award for Wine and Spirits Professional of the Year and the International Wine and Spirits award as the Global Wine Communicator of the Year. Karen is the author of the award-winning book, The Wine Bible, the single best-selling wine book in the United States, as well as the creator and Editor in Chief of WineSpeed, her digital newsletter, with an audience of 45,000 subscribers. 

Karen’s counterpart Tony Aspler is returning as Canada’s Regional Chair. Tony is one of the most prolific and influential Canadian journalists, he has been a wine columnist for The Toronto Star for 22 years and is the author of 18 wine books, including The Wine Atlas of Canada.

In 2017, over 17,200 wines entered the competition from all over the world, with 57 countries participating. The highest scoring wines from the US included Domaine Serene’s Jerusalem Hill Vineyard Pinot Noir 2013 and Reninger’s Syrah 2013, from Oregon and Washington state respectively; underscoring these region’s rise in global recognition. The Ontario Niagara Peninsula region of Canada showed strongly, with Adamo Riesling 2016 winning a double Platinum for Best in Category and Best in Show. 2018 DWWA award-winners will have the opportunity to participate in 17 consumer and trade tastings and masterclasses in London and around the world, including the new Unsigned Talent Tasting for those looking to break into the UK market.

Entry fees are £139 per wine (online entry), if wineries chose to participate in consolidated shipping, the cost is an additional £48 per wine.

Launched in 2004 by Decanter magazine, 2018 is the fifteenth edition of the competition. The DWWA is respected internationally for its prestigious reputation and unrivalled global consumer influence. About the 2018 DWWA Judging Process

This year, judging week will take place over two weeks. The first week (30 April – 4 May) will see wines given medals up to Gold using the 100-point system. The second week (8-10 May) will see all Gold wines re-tasted to win the Platinum medals by our four co-chairs and a selected eight regional chairs, including Jane Hunt MW, Andy Howard MW, Justin Howard-Sneyd MW, Jasper Morris MW, Peter Richards MW, Anthony Rose, and Pedro Ballesteros Torres MW. The four co-chairs will select the ‘Best in Show ’winners on 9 May amongst the Platinum winners awarded. Our rigorous process ensures each wine is tasted thoroughly.

Under the 100-point system, wines will be commended with a seal of approval, or given a bronze, silver, gold, platinum, and best in show award.  For more information on the DWWA judging process, please visit decanter.com/judging
