Limited-Production Wine Comes from 100-Year-Old Vines on Historic Russian River Valley Property

HEALDSBURG, Calif. (November 15, 2017) – Ted Seghesio, fourth generation winemaker and general manager at Seghesio Family Vineyards, is pleased to introduce the first vintage of the highly-anticipated Montafi Zinfandel, a limited production wine made from 100-year-old vines from Montafi Vineyard in the high plains of Russian River Valley.

“We are thrilled to add Montafi to our collection of Zinfandels,” said Ted Seghesio. “Old Vine Zinfandel from Russian River Valley is becoming more of a rarity, designating the surviving vineyards as treasures. Montafi, in particular, has an impressive pedigree.”

Seghesio Family Vineyards, known for producing critically-acclaimed Zinfandel that honors the history of Sonoma and the Seghesio family heritage, purchased the 24-acre Montafi Vineyard in 2014. The production of this inaugural Montafi Zinfandel reinforces Seghesio’s commitment to farming and producing benchmark Zinfandels from old vines in Sonoma County.

Seghesio’s history in Sonoma dates back to 1895, when Italian immigrant Edoardo Seghesio planted his first vineyard, which became what is now known as Home Ranch, located in northern Alexander Valley.  Today, Seghesio Family Vineyards is proud to produce wines from over 300 acres of vineyards across renowned Zinfandel appellations in Sonoma, including the vineyards that Edoardo first planted in the late 1800’s.

Approximately 13 acres of Montafi Vineyard were planted to Zinfandel in 1916 by Italian immigrant Benito Montafi in Russian River Valley’s Piner-Olivet district. Here, the lower overall temperature, courtesy of marine cooled air that flows up the Petaluma Gap, creates significant diurnal swings. This phenomenon prolongs hang time, which allows for a steady accumulation of ripe fruit flavors, aromatic intensity and phenolic ripeness.

Only 223 cases were produced of the inaugural 2015 Montafi Zinfandel which is available now and can be acquired for $65 per bottle.
