Merlot Momentum

Merlot is one of the most popular fine wine varieties in the world with more than 720,000 acres planted worldwide. Merlot is the third leading red varietal after Cabernet Sauvignon and Red Blends purchased by Americans today in California wine shipments. California Merlot consumption was approximately 17 million cases in 2016 in the U.S.*, up dramatically from 2.8 million cases sold in 1994. Luxury Merlot over $20 grew 5 percent in the last year in U.S. retail channels**, and Merlot is one of the top four most important red wines in U.S. restaurants, along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir & Bordeaux Blends***. Merlot is the most widely planted grape in France, with more than 280,000 acres. According to Wine Searcher, two of the most expensive Merlot wines in the world are Chateau Pétrus and Chateau le Pin from Bordeaux, both of which sell for an average of $3,000 per bottle and are comprised of 70-100% Merlot.
