2017 “Importer of the Year” Contender Welcomes Petite Sirène To The Fold

NEW YORK, NY (September 20, 2017)—Cape Classics announces the addition of Petite Sirène to their portfolio through a partnership with famed Third Growth Bordeaux estate, Château Giscours in Margaux. This collaboration will bring two wines to the market: Petite Sirène Bordeaux Sauvignon-Sémillon 2016 and Petite Sirène Bordeaux Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot 2015. This is the second Bordeaux winery to join the Cape Classics book this year, also priced at under $20 suggested retail.

“We wanted to approach Bordeaux in the exact same way we did the Loire and Burgundy—find stories that need to be told and wine that over-delivers for the price,” remarked Robert Bradshaw, President and COO of Cape Classics. “With Petite Sirène by Château Giscours we found both.”

Though the label reads Petite Sirène, the production of the wines—from terroir selection to bottling—is controlled exclusively by the winemaking team at Giscours. Grapes are sourced from a trusted producer with exceptional terroir in Côtes de Bordeaux, whose vines are situated on slopes that overlook the Garonne. They benefit from clay-gravel and clay-limestone soils, a warm climate and southwestern exposure. The trellised vines range from 10 to 20 years in age and are pruned in the Double Guyot method, chosen for ideal bunch distribution, ensuring optimal grape maturity. All vineyard care is subject to the farm’s strict traceability policy. The wines are certified in agriculture raisonnée (sustainable agriculture), as illustrated by the estate’s implementation of numerous environmentally-friendly measures.

“Our technical team from Château Giscours brings the same expertise and skill to this wine as our Grand Cru Classé, stated Alexander van Beek, CEO Château Giscours, Margaux Grand Cru Classé. “With Petite Sirène, our aim is to produce a very approachable and affordable Bordeaux blend, satisfying all the wine lovers, including the most demanding connoisseurs.”

  • Petite Sirène Bordeaux Sauvignon-Sémillon 2016, SRP $19.99: Powerful aromas of citrus and exotic fruits combine with a hint of smoke. The fresh, mineral-driven mouthfeel offers appealing fruit and acidity, finishing with a remarkable aromatic persistence. This is a lovely, expressive white, full of character and perfect for every day.
  • Petite Sirène Bordeaux Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot 2015, SRP $19.99: This bright, ripe red Bordeaux combines complex berry aromas with suppleness and power on the palate. Notes of red fruit intertwine with gentle tannins which are balances by a juicy acidity, making this wine exceptionally food friendly.

“With this fantastic vintage, we have decided to go even further in our search of quality and think this wine is ready for wider distribution, specifically in the American market,” said van Beek. “To achieve this, we needed a proven importer partner, with a global portfolio and proven track record of success. Cape Classics fit our requirements, and we are very enthusiastic to share this project with them!”

This year marks Cape Classics’ 25th Anniversary, and has quickly become a banner year for the importer of South African and French wines. Throughout the last several months they have begun their first foray into Bordeaux, celebrated the start of the first teaching training session resulting from the efforts of their 501(c)(3) organization, The Indaba Education Fund, and most recently accepted the nomination for Wine Enthusiast Magazine’s 2017 “Importer of the Year”. This partnership with Château Giscours proves to be yet another exciting milestone for the team.

“The Château’s pedigree, legacy and attention to detail are show-stopping,” enthused Bradshaw. “Everyone we met—from the production, tasting room and hospitality teams to the Managing Director, Alexander Van Beek—shared a vision for Petite Sirène that inspired us, and once we tasted the wines, we knew they were for us. With the brand newly taken over by Château Giscours’ technical team, Petite Sirène is sure to be an exceptional value from Bordeaux for years and decades to come.”
