Maison Joseph Drouhin Obtains ISO 22000 Certification


(NEW YORK, NY) The family-owned and operated wine estate Maison Joseph Drouhin, founded in 1890, acquired the ISO 22000 certification on July 28, 2017. The extensive process began in 2014 as a proactive effort to meet the anticipating demands of house customers. Maison Joseph Drouhin has established a food safety management system that not only meets the standards of the PRP (PreRequisite Programs), but also the standards of HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points).

“Achieving this certification status is an important moment for our estate,” said the President of Maison Joseph Drouhin, Frédéric Drouhin, “Our main challenge was to preserve the soul and style of the wines, as we wanted to maintain all of the nuances and subtleties of the terroirs that are vinified. We’ve been able to achieve this while also upholding the food security approach. As such, our customers can rest assured that the quality of their wine will not be compromised following the implementation of the new food safety procedures.”

ISO 22000 is a Food Safety Management System that can be applied to any organization in the food chain, and the certification allows a company to show their customers that they have a food safety management system in place. ISO 22000 requires that PRPs – appropriate to the organization and product – be implemented to control the likelihood of introducing hazards. Maison Joseph Drouhin’s production has met these standards by planning, designing, documenting and implementing a comprehensive system of food safety management.  The new system not only involves a food safety protocol, but also ensures traceability, communication standards, and the application of good practices for all staff involved.


The family-owned and operated estate was founded in 1880 and produces nearly 90 different appellations – all from Burgundy. Maison Joseph Drouhin owns 80 hectares (192 acres) of vineyards in Burgundy. The vineyards are principally (60%) Grand and Premier Cru appellations of the Côte d’Or and Chablis. The estate has a turnover of 35 million euros, exports to 90 countries, and is currently run by the 4th generation. Since 1987, the family also owns 219 acres in Dundee Hills, known as Domaine Drouhin Oregon, and 229 acres in Eola-Amity Hills, known as Roserock since December 2013.
