Roguenant honored for innovation and winemaking excellence while elevating wines from San Luis Obispo Wine Country

July 18, 2017, (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) – Esteemed winemaker Christian Roguenant has been named Winemaker of the Year by his colleagues in the San Luis Obispo County wine industry. The annual award given out at the California Mid State Fair honors members of the local wine community for their dedication to winemaking, stewardship, innovation and leadership.

“It’s a great honor to be recognized with this prestigious award by my friends and peers,” said Roguenant. “The Central Coast is one of the best winemaking regions in the world and I enjoy the challenge of creating cool climate wines from the historic Paragon Vineyard in the Edna Valley. I’ve had the opportunity to grow and develop as a winemaker by always pushing the boundaries of what’s possible and have had the good fortune to be supported and encouraged by many along the way.”

Roguenant has been winemaker for the Niven Family’s portfolio of wines for nearly 20 years, launching and developing several iconic brands. His influence and skill are showcased in the variety of wines he creates and the way he incorporates a sense of place in each, including:

  • Baileyana wines are the epitome of elegance with refined, rich and perfectly balanced Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs, Syrahs and sparkling wines from the Paragon Vineyard estate.
  • Tangent wines are one of the world’s greatest explorations of cool climate, alternative white wines, which are estate grown from a single pioneering vineyard in the coolest AVA in California. These Edna Valley wines include Albariño, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Pinot Gris, and Grenache Blanc.  Roguenant has been innovating with Tangent since day one where he is one of only a few winemakers putting wines in bottles, kegs, and cans.
  • Zocker is the essence of unconventional where he highlights uber rare Grüner Veltliner and its endless potential when grown 5.4 miles from the Pacific.
  • Roguenant spreads his wings with True Myth where he embraces the best of San Luis Obispo County by showcasing Edna Valley Chardonnay from the historic Paragon Vineyard and Cabernet Sauvignon from the rugged terrain of Paso Robles.

Roguenant is the authority on Central Coast wines. His winemaking career began in his native Burgundy and has taken him around the world including 15 years with Champagne Deutz, one of the premier Champagne houses in France, and awarded him the prestigious honor of making the sparkling wine for the 1988 Olympics hosted in Korea. As winemaker of the year, Roguenant will continue finding new ways to craft wines ranging from esoteric to elegant.
