Narmada Winery was awarded a gold medal for Narmada Melange 2014 at the TexSom International Wine Awards. This competition features a judging panel that includes no fewer than thirty-four Master Sommeliers and Masters of Wine. There were over 3000 entries from around the world, sampled by 67 judges from the US and nine other countries. Local sommelier John Filkins of Fiola Mare and Fiola in Washington, DC was among the esteemed judges.
An attractive purple color shows off the freshness of this Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blend that includes the four classic Bordeaux varietals. Made with 100% Virginia grapes, Narmada Melange shows lively fruit-forward flavors of plum, currant and blackberry seasoned by spicy oak and polished tannin. With its Invigorating finish and fine balance, the wine promises to improve with age.
“While our 2014 Melange is bright and flavorful now, it is only available by special order,” says winemaker Dr. Sudha Patil. “We are confident that additional cellar aging will bring more depth and complexity. We’ve recently put together a vertical 3-pack of Melange, with vintages 2008, 2009, and 2010. The ’08 has matured in a particularly interesting way.” Melange 2011 is the vintage currently available at Narmada’s tasting room. No 2012 or 2013 was produced.
Narmada Melange 2014 is a blend of 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, 12% Petit Verdot. Food affinities pan-roasted venison with creamy baked potato and celeriac; shiitake and baby bella mushroom risotto; boeuf bourguignon (red wine and mushrooms).
Additional accolades for Narmada Melange 2014 were received from Tastings, with a score of 91 points, and from the Atlantic Seaboard Wine Association who awarded it it Best in Class last December.
