Teuwen Communications is Named Agency of Record

New York, NY, March 30, 2017 — San Marzano, a leading Puglian wine producer, announces Teuwen Communications as their agency of record for the United States. Teuwen Communications will execute a dynamic campaign spanning press relations, events and social media to showcase San Marzano’s dedication to creating regionally authentic wines and supporting local vine-growers.

Located in southern Italy, Puglia (also known as Apulia) forms the heel of the Italian peninsula’s “boot.” The region is located between the Ionian and Adriatic seas and has a warm, Mediterranean climate with medium-low rainfall. It is known for its deep copper colored, cool, calcareous clay soils and ungrafted, bush-trained vines. The region’s resulting wines are ripe and lively, recognized for their versatility and pair-ability.

San Marzano was established in 1962 in Puglia’s San Marzano di San Giuseppe DOP when 19 vine growers—whose families farmed the land for generations—bonded together to protect and promote their work. Today, San Marzano has 1,200 devoted growers across 3,500+ acres of vineyards in Salento, Puglia’s southernmost sub-region. San Marzano focuses on native Puglian grapes, grown primarily on bush vines, that thrive in the region’s distinctive environment.

Currently led by President Francesco Cavallo, San Marzano has created a balance that deeply respects the region’s age-old traditions and inherent characteristics while recognizing the benefits of modern tools and approaches. “Our mission is to create wines that are pure expressions of our terroir. Wines that speak to our close connection to, and pride in Puglia’s landscape and our grapes,” states Cavallo. “This passion carries through to production, resulting in high-quality wines that deliver elegance with marked varietal and regional characteristics.”

The program will focus on seven wines from the San Marzano’s repertoire that present the elegant complexity of Primitivo, Negroamaro and Malvasia Nera.

Taló offers an approachable introduction to the region. This range takes the name of one of the founding families and is an ode to all the San Marzano grower families, who are proud stewards of Puglia’s rich agriculture. SRP: $18.99.

Taló Primitivo di Manduria DOP: Primitivo, 6 months in French and American oak

Taló Negroamaro Salento IGP: Negroamaro, 6 months in French oak

Taló Malvasia Nera Salento IGP: Malvasia Nera, 6 months in French oak

Taló Salice Salentino DOP: 85% Negroamaro, 15% Malvasia Nera, 6 months in French oak

The Tramari Rosé is 100% Primitivo and its name references its location, translating to “between the seas.” SRP: $18.99.

San Marzano’s signature wines (SRP: $35.99) showcase the power and great aging potential of Primitivo, a symbol of the region of Puglia and of the winery. These wines are produced via the appassimento technique, in which grapes are dried for about a week to concentrate their qualities.

Sessantanni Primitivo di Manduria DOP is named for the now-over 60-year-old bush vines that bear its fruit. The grapes are hand-harvested and the wine is aged for 12 months in fine French and American oak.

The Anniversario 62 Primitivo di Manduria DOP Riserva refers to the year the winery launched. Grapes are hand-harvested at advanced stages of ripeness, and the wine is aged for 18 months in fine French and American oak.

This is San Marzano’s second year in the US market, and the wines are currently available in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, both on- and off-premise. For more information on San Marzano, please visit: CantineSanMarzano.com
