The Sonoma Vintage Report Will Take Place March 8, 2017

Sebastopol, CA–This year’s Sonoma County Vintage Report will be held on March 8 at the Barlow in Sebastopol. Look forward to a half-day event that aims to bring together Sonoma County’s grapegrowers and winemakers with some of the leading studies in the field of viticulture.

Discussions at the Vintage Report revolve around the previous harvest and the purpose of the dialogue is to engage the greater industry on how thoughtful collaboration can foster sustainable and innovative vineyard practices. Throughout the day the Vintage Report invites scientists and industry specialists to present on their most recent findings relevant to growing grapes in Sonoma County. This year several distinguished scientific speakers will present at the event including:

  • Luca Brillante of UC Davis who will discuss assessing vineyard variability through a spatially explicit selective-harvest approach;
  • Erin Miller of Twomey Cellars who will be delivering a synopsis of her approach to adopting vineyard optimization techniques;
  • Eric Herve of ETS Labs who will cover various practical methods in improving phenolic developments;
  • Cecilia Cunningham of Vivelys who will present on berry maturation patterns in cabernet sauvignon.
  • Throughout the half-day event, Thibaut Scholasch of Fruition Sciences will discuss the 2016 growing year in terms of climatic conditions most important to vintners on the North Coast, and dive into topics regarding plant physiology, light penetration, and fruit composition effect on wine sensorial properties.
  • The Vintage Report will cap off the day’s technical content with an expert panel of winemakers and grape growers who will discuss elements of vineyard response and wine composition in the specific context of Sonoma County during the 2016 vintage.

This will be a data-rich discussion with insight fueled by vineyard data collected during 2016. Major themes discussed at this year’s event will focus on vine response following a wet winter as well as light and temperature effects on fruit chemical composition in the context of Sonoma County.

About the Vintage Report

Since 2010, the Vintage Report has brought together scientists, winemakers and industry leaders from all over the world to discuss the previous year’s harvest in light of the most recent scientific findings. This is a constructive event that interacts with attendees by asking the question: How can the lessons of the previous harvest be utilized to improve vineyard practices and wine quality? The Vintage Report creates a platform to foster technical discussion as well as a deep dive into the wine industry’s most innovative vineyard solutions. Considering the event’s scope, the Vintage Report is open to cellar and vineyard professionals including winemakers, vineyard managers, viticulturist, assistant winemakers and winery owners. In addition to Sonoma, the Vintage Report has been held this year in Napa, Paso Robles, Bordeaux, Provence, and Languedoc.
