La Rioja Alta ranks first among standout wines on The Enthusiast 100 of 2016

la-rioja-alta-904Haro, Spain (December 1, 2016) – After tasting nearly 22,000 wines from 15 countries, Wine Enthusiast selected La Rioja Alta 2005 Gran Reserva 904 as the #1 Wine of the Year on The Enthusiast 100 of 2016. Representing the best of the best, wines selected for The Enthusiast 100 possess excellent quality-to-price ratios and illustrate the variety and diversity of wines available to consumers. Solidifying its status as one of the rare wine icons of the world, La Rioja Alta’s Gran Reserva 904 tops Enthusiast’s list of standout wines, receiving Editor’s Choice and a 96 point score.

“We are thrilled to be placed at the top of this iconic list of wines from around the globe,” says Guillermo de Aranzabal, President of La Rioja Alta, S.A. “Since our founding, our winery has been 100% committed to producing wines of the highest quality, and it’s an honor to receive this recognition from a leading U.S. wine publication.”

In his review, Spanish and South American Editor Michael Schachner calls the Gran Reserva 904 “the epitome of elegance,” and writes, “one look, one whiff, one taste and you’re swooning.”

Produced from a blend of Tempranillo (90%) and Graciano (10%), grapes for the Gran Reserva 904 are sourced from vines that are over 40 years old from vineyards in Briñas, Labastida and Villalba.

Considered an excellent vintage in Rioja, 2005 also marked a year of dramatic improvements in the harvesting system at the winery. By transitioning to 350 kg crates and using refrigerated transport, the winery saw significant qualitative changes in the winemaking process.

Limited stocks of the Gran Reserva 904 are currently available in the market. However, following tremendous national and international success, the winery announced it depleted all stocks of the 2005 vintage, and will not release the next vintage until the wine has completed its aging in the bottle. Despite desire to meet consumer demand, this philosophy reflects La Rioja Alta’s deep commitment to the highest quality, and their continued respect for the consumer experience.
