As part of a five-year countdown to RDS’ 25th anniversary in 2019, the media seminar also included a special tasting of current release Sauvignon Blanc – the queen to Rutherford’s king, Cabernet Sauvignon. Winemaker Trevor Durling commented that, “We continue to see more and more Sauvignon Blanc in Rutherford, and it’s really exciting. We’re expanding the palette and discovering more of what the phenomenal Rutherford Dust can produce.”

Describing the 2013 vintage, RDS Founding Board Member, Andy Beckstoffer commented, “The growing conditions were ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon in 2013, with dry weather and a long, sunny summer. It’s exactly type of vintage that makes Rutherford consistently one of the best. I think the winemakers will agree, years like 2013 are the ones we all to look forward to.”

RDS’ commitment to stewardship of the land was also celebrated during the Media Seminar, with the formal presentation of the plaque to commemorate the 2016 Riparian Challenge awarded to RDS this year by the American Fisheries Society, Western Division. This special award recognizes the leadership, collaboration, and successful completion of the ambitious thirteen-year (2002-2015) restoration project along the Rutherford reach of the Napa River.

InglenookGrandTastingDuring the afternoon Grand Tasting, thirty-four RDS members poured their Rutherford Appellation wines in Inglenook’s South Barrel Room for approximately 200 wine media and trade attendees. While the focus for this year’s event was the 2013 vintage of Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon and current release Sauvignon Blanc, wineries also poured additional 2013 Rutherford red wines, their current vintage Rutherford white wines and a several library vintage Cabernet Sauvignons.

The Rutherford Appellation is located in the historic heart of the Napa Valley. It is known world-wide for its signature “Rutherford dust”, a term used to reflect its terroir, its deep connection to the soil in the vineyards, the wine and the wineries of Rutherford. The Rutherford Dust Society is a grower and vintner organization established in 1994 to encourage and promote the highest quality standards in grape growing and winemaking in the Rutherford AVA, and to help wine lovers and the wine trade discover Rutherford’s expression of its unique terroir.
