The Legendary Winery Releases Their First Grenache-Syrah-Mourvedre Blend

Ferrari-Carano UnaJuly 19, 2016; (HEALDSBURG, Calif.)—Ferrari-Carano Vineyards and Winery introduced a new limited release wine called UNA. This complex blend of grenache, syrah and mourvèdre grapes from RockRise Mountain Ranch in Sonoma County’s Alexander Valley is inspired by the Rhone blends of Southern France.

The wine’s name, UNA, is Latin for together, all in one. “The name has two meanings; we wanted to create an elegant blend that brings together complementary grapes to produce a wine of depth and finesse, and we also hope that the experience of drinking UNA will bring friends together,” says Ferrari-Carano owner Rhonda Carano.

UNA celebrates the distinctive hillside terroir of Ferrari-Carano’s RockRise Mountain Ranch, which is uniquely suited to Rhone grape varieties. The 2014 vintage produced a great crop of grapes. After a dry winter, the growing season began with early bud break and a warm, dry spring followed by a warm summer. Elevated temperatures toward the end of August prompted an earlier harvest than in years past. These favorable conditions resulted in wines with good color, tannin structure and concentrated flavors.

At the winery, UNA is aged in a blend of new and used French oak barrels for 10 months. Lots are kept separate until blending and bottling. The wine then rests in bottle for another year prior to release. The resulting wine is fruit-forward and pairs well with bold red meats like red meats like beef, lamb, veal or sausage.

Winemaker for Ferrari-Carano’s red wines, Rebecka Deike says, “The fragrant flavors from our grenache grapes combine with the syrah’s rich, full tannins, while a small amount of mourvèdre lends to a well-rounded, long finish. You get these delicious aromas of plum, black currant, and black pepper, and then on the palate you get berries, brown sugar, spice and cocoa.”

UNA belongs to Ferrari-Carano’s Vineyard Selects family of wines, available directly from the winery and the Ferrari-Carano website for $39. Just 502 cases were produced in its inaugural vintage.
