González Byass Acquires Controlling Share of Chilean Winery Veramonte

Gonzalez ByassJerez, Spain June, 24, 2016 – González Byass has announced that it has acquired the Huneeus family’s controlling interest of Veramonte, one of Chile’s most recognised and prestigious wineries, well-known for the situation of its vineyards and the quality of its wines. The Rojas Family will retain their existing stake in the company.

The winery’s brands Neyen, Primus, Ritual and Veramonte, distributed in 37 countries, stand out in the premium Chilean category and are market leaders in the United States.

Veramonte is made up of two winemaking facilities and 600 hectares of vineyards spread across some of the country’s most renowned wine producing areas, such as Casablanca and Colchagua, as well as the famous, hidden Apalta Valley.

Commenting on the acquisition, the González family said, “By taking this step out of Spanish wine production, we are reinforcing our strategy towards the internationalisation of the company, whilst strengthening both our portfolio of brands and international distribution operation.”

The Huneeus family will keep over 2700 hectares of land in Casablanca, including significant vineyard holdings. Agustin Huneeus adds, “Our family has been deeply connected with the Chilean wine industry since the 1960s, and we have no intention of leaving now.  This deal represents an opportunity for Veramonte premium Chilean wines to gain further international exposure through González Byass, while allowing us to focus on further developing our luxury wine portfolio in the U.S. market.”

This new acquisition allows the Jerez-based company to enhance the capabilities of its distribution operation in the USA, González Byass USA, broadening its portfolio with the exceptional Veramonte brands. Agustin F. Huneeus will hold a counseling position to González Byass in this market.

This investment initiative, added to González Byass’ recent entry into the DO Rías Baixas with the purchase of the Pazos de Lusco estate and the company’s existing unrivalled Spanish presence in Jerez, Arcos de la Frontera, Rioja, Somontano, Penedes, Castilla-La Mancha and Rueda, makes up one of the most comprehensive and outstanding wine offers in the Spanish wine world.
