Barbera FestBarbera is fast on its way to becoming a signature wine of the Sierra Foothills as attendees at the Barbera Festival in Plymouth, Calif. on June 11 will note as they taste Barbera from more than 60 Sierra Foothills wineries and 25 wineries from elsewhere in California. Based on an analysis of data gathered for the new book, “Wineries of the Sierra Foothills,” 30 percent of the current 280 Sierra Foothills wineries declared that Barbera is their Landmark Wine or Hidden Gem.

Among the Sierra Foothills counties where Barbera is a signature variety, Amador County counts 40 percent of wineries in this category, with Placer County close behind. Calaveras County and Nevada County each zip in at 25-30 percent on the “Barbera is our landmark wine or hidden gem” scale, notes author Barbara Keck.

California’s Sierra Foothills is the biggest wine area in the USA in geographical terms. “It is also a very fast-growing area in terms of new wineries,” noted Keck. “For the past five years, I’ve added 15 to 20 new wineries each year to the database.”

Although Barbera predominates as a favorite variety among Sierra Foothills wineries, at the June 11 Barbera Festival in Plymouth, Calif., about a quarter of the tasting tables will offer Barbera from other California wine areas. Sampling Barbera from over 80 wineries will introduce wine lovers to a variety of Barbera wines that differ in taste due to terroir, elevation, and winemaking styles.

About the Barbera Festival: The Barbera Festival was founded in 2011 to celebrate the barbera variety. The event quickly garnered attention throughout the West and in 2015 moved to the beautiful grounds of Terra d’Oro Winery/Montevina Vineyards, the original home of barbera in Amador County. The festival, which also helped launch the immensely successful Amador Four Fires festival, features more than 80 wineries from across California, fine local cuisine, live music and regional artists. Terra d’Oro Winery/Montevina Vineyards is located at 20680 Shenandoah School Road in Plymouth. All proceeds benefit the non-profit Amador Community Foundation.
