Wine Enthusiast Names Wine Buyer Martin Reyes One of U.S.’s “Top 40 Under 40 Tastemakers”

Martin Reyes-ColorSAN RAFAEL, Calif., October 5, 2015Global Wine Company is proud to announce that Wine Enthusiast magazine has honored its senior wine buyer, Martin Reyes, as one of 2015’s “Top 40 Under 40 Tastemakers.” Wine Enthusiast profiles Reyes in its October 2015 issue, describing him as “spreading influence through wine programs,” where he “intends to broaden his range of imports … to offer exciting wines to explore for his club members.” Wine Enthusiast notes, “Reyes’ influence in the industry runs deep,” and calls out his prolific work as a wine buyer, a writer, and a respected wine educator. Reyes is a first generation American from Mexican immigrant parents, a Stanford graduate, fluent in four languages, a fully accredited sommelier, and candidate for the prestigious Master of Wine certification.

Reyes is responsible for many of the selections in Global Wine Company’s monthly wine programs for partners that range from The New York Times and Williams-Sonoma to star chef Michael Mina and The Washington Post, and its proprietary Global Wine Cellars club. He manages unique imports and the wines he selects are often the first introduction between a new, undiscovered category and the thousands of club members who ultimately receive them.

“The joy for me is meeting winemakers and visiting wineries in far corners of the world—tiny producers making wonderful wines that we get to share with our members,” says Reyes. “I often like to challenge stereotypes and preconceived notions by exploring unusual countries. We might select wines from Bulgaria, Slovenia or even Hungary. But only if they’re excellent.”
