paul-hobbs(September 14, 2015)  Tatiana and Gerret Copeland, owners of Bouchaine Vineyards, the oldest continuously operating winery in the Carneros District, today announced that they have hired winemaker Paul Hobbs as consultant.

The move is on the heels of hiring a new winemaker and general manager this spring, accomplished Carneros winemaker Chris Kajani, formerly winemaker of Saintsbury.  “Hiring Paul Hobbs is one of several steps we are taking to poise our winery as a leading producer of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the Carneros region,” says Tatiana Copeland.  “There will be more to come,” she adds.

Hobbs has twice been named “Wine Personality of the Year” by Robert M. Parker, Jr. and was recently called “The Steve Jobs of Wine” by Forbes.com.  In addition to his consulting practice, he is the owner of Paul Hobbs and CrossBarn wineries in Sonoma County, and is partner in several wineries including Viña Cobos in Mendoza, Argentina, Crocus in Cahors, France, and a new vineyard development in New York’s Finger Lakes region.

As a winemaker, Hobbs is highly regarded for his ability to identify exceptional vineyards, as well as for his pioneering spirit in working with new and historical sites and regions that are built on a foundation of strong, collaborative relationships.

“I have two reasons that excite me about this new relationship,” said Paul Hobbs.  “One is my connection with the Copelands and the passion they bring to the winery, along with their love of wine.  The second has to do with the vineyards, the terroir – it’s a perfect piece of property.  We can make great wines there.”

“We are very excited to have Paul Hobbs consulting with us,” commented Chris Kajani.  “Paul has been working with Carneros fruit since his own winery’s inception in 1991.  His knowledge of the region, combined with his intense focus on exceptional farming and minimal winemaking, is something I admire.”

Bouchaine Vineyards is located on 104 rolling acres in the southernmost part of Napa Valley’s cool-climate Carneros region.  The vineyards include two terraced hills named the Garetto Hills, after Johnny Garetto, who founded the original winery in the late 1920s.  Both hills rise about 200 feet above sea level.  To the south, marshlands fall away to San Pablo Bay, the northern part of San Francisco Bay.  On a clear day, the city of San Francisco is visible 40 miles to the south, as are the Bay Area’s two highest peaks: Mount Diablo and Mount Tamalpais. The micro-climate creates the perfect conditions for making exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
