Capital Dime Sacramento took top honors benefitting If Given a Chance and Food Literacy Center

NAPA VALLEY, CA (May 13, 2015) – More than 680 food and wine enthusiasts headed to HALL St. Helena on a beautiful Saturday afternoon to taste, sip, and crown four champions at the 6th Annual HALL Cabernet Cookoff on April 25. The event raised $59,319 in ticket sales, sponsor contributions, and also included a generous donation from the HALL Napa Valley Community Fund. The event featured 15 All-Star San Francisco and Napa Valley-based Chef teams who were tasked with creating a seasonal dish to pair with HALL’s newly released 2012 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Each chef team competed for a local charity of their choice.

“We are grateful this event is recognized each year by so many people,” says vintner Kathryn Walt Hall. “Napa Valley is the leading wine and food destination in the U.S. and we are proud the Cabernet Cookoff not only supports our community, but also showcases the flavor and diversity of the Valley.”

Dishes were evaluated by guests and a special panel of judges including Chef Ken Frank of La Toque, Chef Lars Kronmark of the Culinary Institute of America, Virginie Boone from Wine Enthusiast and Ian White from San Francisco Magazine.

The 2015 winning teams, charities and respective dishes include:

Judges’ Choice 1st Pl: Chef Zack Mutrux, PRESS & Charity, If Given a Chance

Dish: Braised lamb neck with beef fat potatoes and bacon sherry vinaigrette

People’s Choice 1st Pl: Chef Chris Jorosz, Andrea Reiter, Capital Dime & Charity, Food Literacy Center

Dish: Savory wild rice Belgian waffles, crispy duck and fig balsamic wildflower syrup

Judges’ Choice 2nd Pl: Chef Victoria Acosta, The Grill at Meadowood  & Charity, Community Resource for Children

Dish: Beef short ribs with charred Meadowood garden spring onions and huckleberry jus

People’s Choice 2nd Pl: Chef Mark Dommen, One Market San Francisco & Charity, Napa Valley Hospice ADS

Dish: Sauerbraten braised beef cheeks, house cured pancetta, faro, Maitake mushrooms

The event included Viticulture Sponsor’s such as San Francisco Magazine, Nixon Peabody and Classic Party Rentals. Harvest Sponsor’s included Villagio Inn & Spa, Alkar, Lux Productions, Print Inkorporated, Benefit Marketing, Culligan Water, Harvest Sanitation, CPA Valet, Gifre Tableware, Snap Fiesta, Frank Rimerman and My Office Products. This year’s event also marked the first to include a VIP Sky Loft Ticket for guests wanting an elevated experience by gaining access to the historic Bergfeld building. The VIP Ticket included tastings of HALL’s newly released 2012 “Bergfeld” Cabernet Sauvignon.

HALL wines that were served during the event included 2012 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, 2014 Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc and 2012 ‘Coeur’ Cabernet Sauvignon. Proceeds from those wine sales as well as HALL merchandise sold also benefitted the Cabernet Cookoff. Additionally, local radio station 99.3 The Vine broadcasted live during the event with popular radio personality, CJ.

Since inception, the Cabernet Cookoff has raised $200,000 for charities in and around the Bay Area. The 2014 HALL Cabernet Cookoff drew more than 600 culinary and wine lovers and raised $48,000 for the top four winning team’s sponsored charities.
