Italian Wine Professional Course Returns to San Francisco

10-Week Certification Program Begins at the San Francisco Wine School Tuesdays, March 31-June 2, 2015

Italian Wine ProfessionalSan Francisco welcomes the return of the Italian Wine Professional™ (IWP) program, a comprehensive training and certification program that offers a fresh take on Italian wine education, at the San Francisco Wine School beginning on Tuesday, March 31. The 10-week program from Italian Wine Central, the leading English-language source of up-to-date, accurate and easily navigable Italian wine information, is geared toward those who work in retail, restaurant, import, and distribution roles, but is also ideal for wine writers, educators and avid connoisseurs who wish to expand their knowledge of Italian wine. Organized by wine style, the program, which includes a rich online learning component, encompasses 9 three-hour classes and tastings, culminating in a final exam. Students who pass the exam and class presentation project are designated as Italian Wine Professionals. The program costs $1,395 and is taught by instructors David Glancy, MS, CWE, IWP and Fred Swan, DWS, IWP. Topics covered include:

  • Italy’s major grape varieties and their main growing regions
  • Italy’s most important denominations that are widely available in the U.S.
  • Strategies for presenting and selling Italian wines to restaurant and retail establishments
  • Latest ideas on Italian wine & food pairing
  • Italian wine labeling conventions and how they fit into EU law
  • Approaches for creating compelling wine lists that showcase Italian wine

Italy continually ranks as the #1 source for imported wines in the U.S., yet with over 400 denominations and even more grape varieties, Italy also merits the top spot on wine professionals’ lists of countries that challenge them most. The Italian Wine Professional from Italian Wine Central helps participants grow more comfortable with the complex world of Italian wine and instills the confidence needed to discuss, sell and buy Italian wine.
