Eugene OR – King Estate Winery announces the arrival of Chef Joe Kim as the new Executive Chef of the King Estate Restaurant. CEO and co-founder, Ed King says “We are super excited to have Joe lead our restaurant and bring his well-honed skills to the kitchen!”
Joe Kim began his career as an apprentice at Ta-ke Japanese Restaurant in Oakland, California before serving as chef at Yoshino Sushi in Alameda under Chef Kazu Yamaguchi. From there, travels through Europe and Asia afforded Joe the opportunity to experience some of the best cuisine the world has to offer. Taking everything he loved about both Eastern and Western cuisines, Joe began to form his very own, signature style.
Upon his return to the Bay Area, Joe worked at Kyoto with Master Chef Tadashi Kirmua. Arriving in Bend in 2011, he worked as a part time sous chef at 5 Fusion before moving to Executive Chef within his first year. Three years after his arrival, Joe’s passion and skill were further commended when he was made a 50% partner in the restaurant where he remains the Chef Owner. His ground breaking style has continued to garner him attention around the Pacific Northwest and beyond. He won the Central Oregon Top Chef competition in 2012 at the Bite of Bend. His most recent accolade, a James Beard Award nomination for Best Chef: Northwest, is unprecedented by a chef in the Central Oregon area- an impressive feat and a testament to his talents. He’s had the honor of being a guest chef in some of the best kitchens in the country, including Thomas Keller’s, The French Laundry in Napa and Grant Achtaz’s Alinea and Next in Chicago. As a chef known for working without traditional boundaries, Joe will bring new and exciting fusions and flavors to the King Estate menu. Kim stated that he is “delighted to join an elite culinary program that places a premium on the art of pairing world-class cuisine with exceptional Oregon wines.”
