Champagne Drappier, Marqués de Vargas, and J. Hofstätter, Join Dreyfus, Ashby & Co.’s Global Portfolio of Renowned Wine Producers

Dreyfus Ashby CoNew York, NY (September 19, 2014) – Dreyfus, Ashby & Co., a leading importer of premium, family-owned wines, announced today that it has been awarded the exclusive rights to import Champagne Drappier, Marqués de Vargas and J. Hofstätter into the United States beginning September 2014.

Chris Ryan, president and CEO, Dreyfus, Ashby and Co., said, “The addition of these producers to our portfolio is a testament to our ability to deliver on our philosophy of family first and successfully appeal to  consumers, sommeliers, and retailers who embrace wines with history, character and intriguing stories from centuries of family ownership.”  Ryan added, “We are thrilled to grow our company with these families as each one embodies the long-term vision and commitment to quality that we value in the members of our family portfolio. These wineries have matured over centuries, yet are being led by a new generation of innovative, game-changers in the world of wine.”  John Caruso, vice president, Dreyfus, Ashby, stated, “Our aim is to represent the famous wine appellations of the world with the most respected and renowned family wineries from those regions, and these wineries fit perfectly with our mission.”

Michel Drappier, president, Champagne Drappier, said, “My family has been growing mostly pinot noir in Champagne for more than 200 years and we are very enthusiastic to have found an importer for the dynamic US market with a specialized knowledge of fine wines.  Dreyfus, Ashby, owned by the famous Drouhin family in Burgundy, is dedicated to great wines – wines with soul.  On both sides of the Atlantic, we share the same passion for quality, expression of the terroir and, of course, pinot noir.  Champagne Drappier is served only on the best tables and sold only by the finest merchants in Europe and the New World.  The people of Dreyfus, Ashby have the expertise to put Drappier at the right place; I mean, in your glass!”

According to Pelayo de la Mata, chairman, Marqués de Vargas, “The US is a key market for our premium Marqués de Vargas wines.  I am extremely pleased to be in the best hands in the American market.  We both have the same philosophy and I am fully convinced that this joint venture will place our wines in the highest position in the Spanish wine segment in the US market.”

Martin Hofstätter, owner, J. Hofstätter, added, “We work with pinot noir and believe that the ‘wine bible’ for this varietal is Burgundy – the attention to detail, the reverence for single parcels and single vineyards – so we are very excited to be included within the Drouhin family’s import company. As we met the Dreyfus, Ashby team, it became clear to me that they are highly-knowledgeable, rooted in a philosophy of excellence and we see tremendous opportunity.”

About Champagne Drappier

Michel Drappier, president of the Drappier House and 7th generation of the Drappier family, leads one of Champagne’s most respected brands.  The Drappier vineyard covers 100 hectares in Urville , in the south of Champagne, where Cistercian monks settled in the 12th century. When Georges Collot, the maternal grandfather of Michel Drappier, planted his first Pinot vines in the 1930s, the neighboring winegrowers laughed at him, calling him “Father Pinot.” The vineyards are now cultivated according to organic and natural principles and Drappier’s belief that  it is the vintner’s task to unite them with precision, wisdom and harmony, at the same time respecting the style of each grape variety, the spirit of each parcel of land, almost retaining every breath of its climate. About Marqués de Vargas

The title Marqués de Vargas is held by a family in which four generations have dedicated themselves to viticulture in Rioja, Spain. In 1840 Felipe de Mata, the eighth Marqués de Vargas, planted the first vines in the outskirts of Logroño, but it was Hilario de la Mata, the father of the current Marqués de Vargas, who for years presided over one of the most emblematic wineries in Rioja. In 1989, Pelayo de la Mata, the current Marqués de Vargas, realized his father’s dream of building a modern, technologically advanced winery on the Estate Hacienda Pradolagar located in Rioja Alta west of Logroño in the heart of the Ebro Valley.  This was the first project for the Grupo Vinícola Marqués de Vargas followed by the expansion the family’s holdings to include Pazo San Mauro in Rias Baixas and Conde de San Cristóbal in Ribera del Duero. 1. We were recently in South Africa and had the pleasure of tasting wines at Nederburg Winery. We were interested in obtaining the Noble Late Harvest ’14 in the U.S. and were told that Dreyfus was their agent in the U.S. Have I found the right Dreyfus? If so, please tell me where I can obtain the wine in Georgia.
    Thank you.
