“We are so excited to host Faith Rumm and her breathtaking paintings of the John Muir trail,” commented Chris Madrigal, Madrigal Family Winery’s 3rd Generation Founder & Vintner.  “I am a guy that needs to spend more of my time outdoors than indoors, so I constantly need to be in the beauty of the wild.  Faith’s painting put me in the wild.”

“I only went out for a walk and finally concluded to stay out till sundown, for going out, I found, was really going in.” —John Muir

California Artist Faith Rumm’s Statement: Walking In Muir’s Light- Selections from the John Muir Trail 100 Paintings Project

The John Muir Trail 100 Paintings Project celebrates the 211 mile John Muir Trail in it’s scenic glory and intricate environments. The JMT in California is one of Americas most famous and treasured trails, following the Sierra Nevada crest from Yosemite to Mount Whitney. It is named after the well-known nineteenth and early 20th century naturalist, environmental philosopher and champion for the establishment of U.S. National Parks. He coined the Sierra Nevada the Range of Light. The trail is currently wildly popular with backpackers from all over the world, a clear demonstration that our human need for wild places is as strong as ever.

The works are a summary of many of Rumm’s trips into the high Sierra, including four through-hikes and many section hikes. The variety of elevations and habitats creates an endless source of inspiration for capturing light that falls on glorious scenes. Faith Rumm attempts accuracy in view and color, with a goal of creating works that the viewer can step into and feel.

Faith Rumm is a prolific fine art oil painter and owner/operator of RummStudio Interpretive Art and Design, founded in 2003. She currently lives in Mariposa, near Yosemite, and continues work on the project. The paintings on display here represent several years of work.

“I’ve always been in love with high Sierra wilderness, and have been exploring these mountains for years. When I was younger, I found myself on high mountaintops and wished I could bottle and share the incredible joy, strength and freedom I felt from these high places. Painting has become my vehicle to do just that.”—Faith Rumm
