New Release Highlights Ethel Lewelling Taplin Vineyard

Taplin CellarsSeptember 21, 2016 (St. Helena, CA) – Taplin Cellars, owned by fifth generation Napa Valley farmers, has released its inaugural Taplin Cellars 2013 Vintage Cabernet Sauvignon. Sourced from their 10-acre Ethel Lewelling Taplin Vineyard, located in St. Helena, this new limited-production Cabernet Sauvignon, crafted by well-respected winemaker Julien Fayard, represents the living history of their family.

The Taplins are descendants of two pioneering farming families who moved west to Napa in the 1800s – the Lewellings and the Taplins. The Lewellings developed vineyards and fruit orchards in the Napa Valley while the Taplins established a dairy farm. Fruit, grains and cattle were the dominant commodities then, and it was only inevitable that Albert Taplin and Ethel Lewelling would meet and marry, joining these two farming families, and living in the heart of the Napa Valley.  These two families have been a part of the history of California for over 150 years.

For more than 40 years the Taplins’ land has been producing grapes for some of the most prestigious Napa Valley wines. It is only in the last few years that the Taplin family has been producing their own award-winning Cabernet Sauvignon under the terra 9 label while learning the taste of the different sections of their estate. In 2013 they hired winemaker Julien Fayard to craft the flagship cuvée under the Taplin Cellars label. This new Cabernet Sauvignon comes from a special section of their vineyards named after their grandmother: Ethel Lewelling Taplin. To achieve the special quality of this wine, the team has introduced new vineyard management practices, including canopy management, per vine farming and small batch selection. This new wine reinforces their focus on a Cabernet family of wines including terra 9 and Melinda’s Rosé.

“We’re the oldest new winery in Napa Valley and we pour our hearts and a lot of Napa Valley history in every glass. We’re committed to this valley and its future,” muses Stephen Taplin.

“Our new Taplin Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon came from our Ethel Lewelling Taplin Vineyard, a 10-acre jewel within Taplin Vineyards in St. Helena. Our 2013 Vintage Cabernet Sauvignon represents the stellar fruit grown on this very special parcel and I couldn’t be happier about how this new wine is showing its source,” enthuses Julien Fayard.

Taplin Cellars, a fifth-generation-owned vineyard and winery located in St. Helena, California, produces single estate Cabernet Sauvignons in the famed St. Helena AVA. A Taplin family great-great-grandfather, John Lewelling, an experienced nurseryman, came to the Napa Valley in 1864. He saw the potential of the fertile valley, and described the land that he subsequently purchased, which is still owned by his descendants, as “nine parts rock and one-part soil.”
